1200 people already access water with renewable energy in the dry corridor of Nicaragua.

The project was carried out within the framework of the Paragua Initiative, composed of Spanish NGOs, among which is Alliance for Solidarity and Nicaraguan local organizations.


Genizaros and El Zapote, two communities nicaragüiense Villanueva municipality, in the department of Chinandega, marked an important point in its development path, achieving what many of its inhabitants and settlers was a forgotten dream. Women will stop walking on rough roads between 1 and 2 kilometers in search of water and children will have a better chance of a dignified life to be able to bathe and consume clean drinking water daily.

To ensure access to safe water to these families, the Spanish organization Alianza por la Solidaridad and Asociación para el Desarrollo Eco Sostenible (ADEES),both partners of the Paragua Initiative Built two water systems with solar energy and in this way supply the much needed liquid in these communities.

Sometimes one fell down with water jugs, says Dona Eva Luz Lopez Blandón, mother of three children, who remembers that during her pregnancies she had to carry water every day, which for her meant an exhausting activity. It was difficult for me when I was pregnant, climbing a big slope and my feet hurt, I was tired and now I'm happy because they supported us to have the water. "

In El Zapote, 120 families are benefited, 65 of them are already connected to the system; While in Los Genízaros 98 families have access to the system. In total, 1200 people (800 women and 500 men) already have drinking water in quantity and quality.

DD0IVpHXoAAmzMtDuring the inauguration, Almudena Moreno, representative of Allianza por la Solidaridad, said that these projects were able to materialize thanks to the commitment of the Paragua Initiative and the financing of the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID); However, he acknowledged that it was through the efforts of families, organized community and the Mayor of Villanueva that dream of having water was reached.

For the sustainability of the project, communities organized in Drinking Water and Sanitation Committees (CAPS) will ensure water quality and maintenance of the system and will establish a monthly payment for housing to cover these expenses.

The opening events included representatives of ADEES, Alianza por la Solidaridad, government delegates, the Municipal Mayor's Office, the Humboldt Center, the German Embassy and The beneficiary families that from now on start the transformation of their lives.
