From Alliance for Solidarity we are implementing food security projects (agriculture, livestock, fish farming) in the Kolda and Saint Louis regions in Senegal, focusing on the border areas with Mauritania, Gambia and Guinea Bissau, and giving importance to the protection of natural resources and the environment.
The need to continue to support and bet on projects like these, far from declining, has been increasing due to the delay in the rainy season, one more year, which, combined with the previous year, has had negative repercussions and could create a risk to food security.
The projects that began in 2016, funded by THE ECDEAO (Economic Community of West African States) and the European Union, focus on strengthening social safety nets through pilot projects that promote local production, introduction of Moringa respect for the environment cantinas escolares. The latter are very important as they improve the nutritional status of students in 20 schools in Kolda and Saint Louis, attracting more students and allowing them to complete their school year with at least one meal a day.
In addition, the promotion of local production and the introduction of Moringa and improved flour has a connection to school canteens as these products are incorporated into the menus of the cantinas causing local producers to expand their market. We create a bond that improves both sides, refueling and growing over time.
For the sustainability of cantinas, Alliance has carried out different activities in the beneficiary locations, such as: the creation of orchards for the cantinas escolares, nutrition training, Moringa and improved flours to canteen cooks, health actors and canteen management committees, the introduction of high nutritional value foods on school menus, awareness of malnutrition and the importance of balanced eating and or, as we said earlier, the creation of partnerships and strengthening the links between local producers and school canteens to maintain local consumption.
